i have a 90 240 with the sohc. i removed the timing chain guide and now i have a rattling coming from it between 2400 rpm and 3000 rpm. i took the valve cover off and looked down in there and the chain is rubbing through the timing cover about 1/8th of an inch. i am thinking about putting a new guide in but i dont want the cheap plastic to break off of it again and have that annoying start up rattle. or is the slight rattle between those rpms normal? any ideas?

Just take off the guide and leave it off. There is really no need to replace it.

its been removed for about 3 months now and ever since i removed it the rattling has been there. in between 2400 and 3000 rpms.

edit: my worry is that it will eventually rub through the timing cover, there is a bolt that is right on the outside of where its rubbing.

Oh s***. So its rubbing the valve cover? Sound like your gonna need a whole timing chain job, before it jumps the time, i'm surprised it hasn't yet.

That still doesnt sound good, but i'm not too familiar with the sohc, so see what some others say.

chain is stretched out and the tensioner cant do its job anymore. I'd get a new chain and tensioner.

thats what i was afraid of. i guess ill have to do it soon. im surprised the tensioner is getting weak already, it maybe has 1000 miles on it and the chain maybe 10,000 miles oh well. better safe than sorry. thanks!

Everybody missed the fact that he has a SOHC.

DO NOT REMOVE THE GUIDES ON AN SOHC! The only guides you can remove are the upper guides on a DOHC.

Buy a complete timing chain kit including gears, tensoner, guides and chain. Cost about $150.

I was wondering if anyone would notice that.
