hi guys I have a u13 bluebird(aust model)ka24de motor, and i have had a slight rattle from the timing chain.Well i got my act together and pulled out the engine and stripped it,but to my discust didn`t find much wrong.I checked the chain length against the new ones i bought and were damb near the same length, however the upper chain on the car is a double row and the new one is only single ? any one got any clues , because my supplier said it should be single according to the books.I was also reading in one of the forums that maybe the chain guides that are the problem and that the fix is to take them off and turf them over your left shoulder but keep the bolts cause they may come in handy. If anyone has had the same problem can you please respond before i put the thing back together Thanks

The timing chain guides are the most common problem on those motors. It's a 80% chance if you hear timing chain noise from the motor it's most likely the timing chain guides. Just take them off you don't need them. As for the other problems, couldn't tell ya. Just going by what I've read over the years on this board.

okay, I had the same problem. My timing chain GUIDES made a lot of Noise.

NISSAN PRESS RELEASE: Stated that the Guides cause the excessive noises, and you don't need them. I've taken both TOP and RIGHT guide off teh TOP chain. and It runs GREAt and quiet.

Here are the two guides you should remove: (I DID!)TOP and RIGHT of the Small -Upper Chain,

This is a very uncommon thing to happen. All Nissan chain driven engines have an automatic tensioner for the timing chains. There is no way to adjust it, at all.

The only thing that can happen is the piston of the tensioner can stick due to sludge build-up and can cause the chain to not have enough tension, which would cause the chain to slip. And with most Nissan engines, if this happens, you will more than likely have a valve or two or most strike the pistons. New engine is needed after that happens........

Well i found the problem. When i stripped the motor i didn`t remove the oil pickup and i should have.I revisited the sump , There is a thin tin gasket under the pickup that squashes down from new that was the problem, i was drawing some air which was giving me the problem , solution was to make a paper gasket refitted everything filed with oil and cranked the engine , oil light was out before it fired, everything is now quiet, It pisses me of because i have been puting up with this noise for ages. Thanks for all your help
