timing chain problems

when removing the head on a dohc is it a must that you remove the whole lower timing chain or can you just remove the idler bolt from the head and let the chain rest without removing the whole lower chain

No, you do not need to remove the lower chain, simply disconnect the idler gear like you say, and for the love of god, don't remove that front cover unless you absolutely need to! The chain won't fall off, let it rest, but be careful not to ding it up, cuz you need to drop the oil pan to change it.

thanks much that is what i thinking it would take but i didn't to have to remove the cover and oil pan if i didnt have to cuz lets face it when replacing the head gasket its already enough work. Thanks again
