Ok, here's my dilima. I have a `95 240sx with the ka24de. I have a spark plug with the head stripped off of it (I don't know how this happened I just bought the car.) I'm removing the head to get to the spark plug. My chilton guide says I can romove the head with out taking the timing chain all the way off but it does not tell me how to do it, it just says leave the chain on the lower sprocket. I can take the cam sprockets off but there is another sprocket right below(inches below) the two cam sprockets and it looks like the chain would catch on that when I try to lift the head off. Is this right? Am I missing something? any help would be appreciated

you may need to jam something preferrably a thin piece of wood to keep the tension snuggly on the chain...then you may be able to remove the chain...just MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT LOSE TENSION.... put the piece of wood in the middle of the chain next to the tensioner...that is how i did it...

your engine is totally different then his. He has no room to shove the wood in there. that lower gear only leaves a couple MM's space to see down in the lower cover.

what you do is remove the upper chain and cam sprocets after its off reove the bolt that holds the idler sprocket in place. now once you get the head ready to pull off take a bungy cord hook it on your hood inner subframe then hook the other end in the idler gears bolt hole and leave it suspended so it keep the lower chain on the crank sprocket. you will need help lifting the head off what you will need to do is have your assistant hold the head while you swap the bungy to the outside of the head opening and rehook it in the idler gear.
