What side is lose? The passenger or driver side? If it's the passenger side, it could be a "frozen" tensioner, not forcing itself against the chain to create tension. If it's on the driver side, the problem could be, and likely is the same. :-) With that said, I've had some timing chain noise in my 1990 240 with a freshly rebuilt engine, pulled the valve cover, and noticed a bit (not much) of slack in the chain. I gather you have more than a "bit", but nonetheless . . . ideas for fixing it? Maybe some WD40 or carb cleaner on the tensioner, sometimes that helps "de-gunk" things . . . other than that, pull the front cover and do the chain, something I'm comtemplating doing to get rid of the noise entirely. Hope that helps.
