ka24e 1990 s240sx

I just replaced my timing chain, tensioner, guide and gears about 3 weeks ago because my guide (plastic from factory) was busted in half.

A couple of days ago I thought I heard the same chain rattle when I let off of the gas at around 3000 rpms.

I pulled the valve cover off and sure enough, the chain is loose on the guide side but tight on the tensoner side.

I think maybe that I have miss aligned the chain? Can I move the chain by one tooth by removing the top sprocket?or do I have to take the whole front of the motor off again?my thinking is that the chain would be tight on both sides if I moved the chain one tooth over to the tensioner side.

Helpthankyou

Don't move a thing. Rotate the chain around till you get the keyways pointing up and the colored link matched to the punchmark on the cam sprocket. That will verify if your chain has moved or not. If you're hearing a rattling, check to make sure all the bolts at the front are still there and that the guides are tightened down. You'll have to pull the front cover for this.

First thing is first though, are you sure the noise is coming from the chain? It could also be some left over plastic bits from when your guide originally busted in the oil pan making the ruckus. Post what you find before going through the pain of basically redoing a chain job.

I found the problem..Both bolts had backed out about 1/2 way from the tensioner (whew cought it just in time.

I was able to tighten them without removing the front of the motor

Thanks for all the help
