Hi everyone,

I am in the process of buying a Q45 and need this timing chain issue clarified. The one I am looking at is a 90 model with plastic backed guides. Do they produce noise or rattling prior to failing like metal backed timing chain guides? or do they just wear out and break without any symptoms whatsoever?

Cheers, Tommy

Hi Tommy, when I replaced my guides on the '91 in Feb this year with about 56k miles on the clock, the guide was broken which I was glade I didn't wait. Prior to the replacement, I can't hear any unusual noise which may be the guide hadn't completely broken off. If it was completely torn, it might have sounded differently. Here are some pic of what they looks like.

I believe the age of the guides is also a factor in determent the shape the guide will be in other then the mileage. A missing piece still no where to be found.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Thanks for your reply. Yes it didnt make sense to me when a Nissan technician was telling me worn out guides ALWAYS make loud rattling/noises. Since its plastic shouldnt sound like marbles in a can compared to metal on metal.
