Just a quick question on how long a timing chain in a Q45 (1990) should last. I am thinking of buying one that has 115,000 miles on it. And am wondering if it will go south on me. Wondering what else I might have issues with coming up. And what the price might be for replacement.

Thank you in advance,RJW

Don't recommend buying 90-93 unless it has documented evidence of having the guides replaced or it could cost you upwards of $3000 unless you DIY.

Thanks for the info. I've got a normal mechanic that does good work for resonable price. I've been reading up on that fix. What's that usually run you for $$$ ?

Parts kit from http://www.everythinginfiniti.com will cost you about $325. I would expect to pay $500 - $600 for labor, if you know the mechanic and they will follow your instructions rather than FSM.

Timing chain will run 250k and easily more. Its those damn plastic guides that are the problem.

Welcome to NICO, you've found a great resource for Nissan/Infiniti automobiles.

If the seller can't provide documented proof the guides have been replaced, and won't appropriately discount the car, walk away as it's a time bomba nd the guides could have broken, but the chain just hasn't jumped time yet. It could do it on your drive home or to the mechainc. If they're willing to discount the car by ~$1800 from fair market value, have it towed (flatbed) to have the guides replaced. But first, you'll want to make sure you can find someone to replace the guides without removing the engine (it can be done).

All in all, I'd recommend you find a Q, with known replaced guides or 94 and newer where the guides came as metal backed originally.

Thank you much for the info. I know the guides haven't been replaced. One owner who had it until he passed away and had all records. I'll see if my mechanic can do the job without the removal of the engine. If not, I'll take your advice and pass. Because the seller will go down on the price for sure. Thanks again all.

7/92 and newer 93s and all after that according to Joe.

Don't worry, these cars are as common as dirt and nobody wants them except us nutjobs. That makes them CHEAP on the used market.

Hold out for a good one with all records at a good price. You will find it.

People get into trouble with these cars when they buy them without researching, or when they get antsy and buy the first one they find.

No date certain of 1993 has been proven to have the improved chain guides.

I very seriously doubt Joe would make such an absolute statement unless it was about 1994 model year.

Tell us a little more about the overall condition of the car? If there has been a lot of other work done (maybe a new transmission, A/C work) and it's cosmetically very good - it could be woth buying it and having the guides replaced. As Robert mentioned, these cars are "common as dirt" but a cosmetically good one is very rare...

Thanks Fellas. The lowdown is this. Other then the hood probably needs replacing due to something falling on it, it's in almost perfect shape. And inside is spotless. Little things like the right rear window doesn't work or the go back button on the cd changer doesn't work. Things like that. 115,000 miles only on a '90. I'm trying to find the actual name of the kit for my mechanic to buy if someone can help. The trani has not been replaced. One owner who only took it to Inifinity with all the paperwork to show for. Let me know on the kit name if possible asap. Thanks much
