This may be a crazy question but on a 240 sx ka24e engine. 90 model

if i set TDC on cyl 1, install camshaft gear with pin at top. Wont engine and valves be in sync no matter where the chain silver registration links line up.

chain is continuous and both gears can only move together .

Is point of lining up chain marks so the number of links on one side allows for proper tension of chain by tensioner? or is it to keep gears wearing in a consistant manner?

probably need an expert answer this one!

thanks

oh my purpose is i don't want to pull cover on a head gasket replacement .

The chain will maintain timing but without the marks how do you know the timing is correct? You can get close without them, but it would be possible to be off a few links.

i agree with daedalus it is very easy to be off 1 tooth the marks are there to assure you are right in the money. if you get too many teeth off you could tag valves.
