Timing Chain KA24E Accessing Manifold Cover

The engine whirls when I crank it with no fire. Stopped while driving at 140,000. My guess is timing chain.

The left wheel housing blocks access to the manifold cover. I was advised that the engine needs to be dropped a bit in order to gain access to the cover. I can remove the wheel okay, but that crossbeam engine support underneath really has me worried. Stepwise, how should I proceed in order to lower the engine about 6 inches. What precautions should I take, (jack placement et. al.), and what might go wrong.
