Sooo... I bought my 89 for 150 bones expecting it to need a new head gasket. After replacing the head gasket and still finding coolant mixing with my oil I found out that the timing chain guide broke and the chain rubbed a hole on the inside of the cover where the water goes into the block. So I replaced the timing chain guides and put everything back together. The car ran. Recently the car stopped running again and I found out that the stationary guide broke again. Here is a picture of what the new guide with less than 25miles on it looks like...

Any Suggestions other than replacing the timing chain? the chain still looks fine (though i may be missing something.)

Both of them?
I'd replace or remove and clean the lower one just to be sure.

he has an 89, so it's the SOHC KA24E engine... one tensioner

when i bought a kit, it included sprockets, a new tensioner and "metal-backed" plastic guides

So wait, theres a hole in the block, in a coolant passage?

There was a hole in the coolant passage on the timing chain cover. I picked one up from the junkyard to replace it. And I replaced the stationary guide already once and the same thing happened again.
