I have a stock 1997 Nissan 240sx with 91,000 miles on it. Just wondering how often most other 240sx owners are changing their timing belts. I heard its best to change it around 100,000. Is that true? Thanks!

Welcome to the boards. First off, our cars don't have belts, but chains. They're not wear items, so you'll never have to replace them, unless they break which is almost never.

The two timing chain guides for the upper chain and tensioner are another story. The guides have been known to cause rattles in older engines and the tensioner can get weak with age as well.

There's a sticky in 240 general about it.

Actually, it is good to change a chain every once in awhile. Nissan will say that it is not a wear item, but then Nissan doesn't really plan on you keeping your car for 200,000+ miles. Just keep an eye on it for signs that it is starting to stretch or wear. In general, that it is loosening.

Short answer to your question: at 91,000 your timing chain should be just fine.

No problem, there's a ton of info here as well as good people.

Post some pics of your car if you can.
