well, the timing chain guides in my redtop just started rattling pretty bad at startup. i am planning on replacing all of them in the future, but i'm broke so i can't right now. is there anything that i can do as a temporary fix?

thanks

Remove the top guide and see if that helps.

remove top guide and upgrade your tensioner with the revised version with finer teeth.

I think I have this same problem with the guides rattling. How do you know that's the problem? I have the consistant rattle, only from 2400-2800 rpm's every time. Doesn't matter if it's hot or cold, it will also make the rattle sound everytime inbetween shifts. Is this the timing chain hitting the guides, or would it be a tensioner?

Is the upper guide easy to remove? Do you just pull the valve cover and take it off, or do you have to mess with timing? I saw the writeup for a ka24 timing chain service, is it basically the same for sr20's too? Thanks!

No KAs and SRs are different. The good news is that SR is much easier to just remove the top guide since it only has one and its directly below the valve cover.

You pop the VC off, then take the guide out. Its as simple as that.

There is also just one tensioner unlike a KA which has two. So replacing the tensioner is just a matter of removing two nuts and installing a new one.

Is there any way to clean the tensioner out while your in there? I saw in the ka how-to that you could spray something on there and move it up and down....can you do that to the sr tensioner without damaging anything?

Is there any downside at all to taking the guide out then? Just want to be sure not to hurt anything in the long run.

Sorry for jacking your thread, but I was about to post the exact same thread so figured I'd just put it in here!

with SRs.. its not a problem with the tensioner getting stuck with gunk...

It has more to do with the coarse teeth that are on the tensioner.. Its more of a design issue. The redesigned it and put finer teeth so that it can engage the chain tighter.

Its been running for about 6 months now... Let me know if you wanna hear a SR bounce off 8500 RPM rev limiter.

Good to hear man, I'm gonna have to do this soon. Did you replace the valve cover gasket, or just reuse the old one? Just wondering what's recommended.

i replaced it because i was starting to see some oil leaking from between the VC and the head. i also did it so that i dont have to replace it later on.
