I'm assuming this is a KA24DE. So, here's what I did. I didn't die and the car still runs, so that's a success in my book.

- Pulled fuse for fuel pump (fuse box near the battery), opened gas cap, ran engine until car stops and then cranked it a few times. Fuel pressure now relieved.

- Removed negative battery cable.

- Removed plug wires and valve cover.

- Removed distributor assembly and *carefully* marked everything so I remembered exactly how to put stuff back together. When in doubt, mark the position of any parts with a little paint or something.

- Removed front cam sprocket cover. Be careful with this, since the head gasket sticks out and forms a seal between the upper cover and the lower timing chain cover. I had to whack the upper cover a few times with a rubber mallet and a small piece of wood to break it loose.

- Remove the upper timing chain guide on the driver's side of the engine.

- Put some good RTV on the front upper cover (along the sides only, I believe, not the top or bottom) and bolt it back on.

- Using your marks, slide the distributor back in and get that all together. Find out you've put it in wrong and pull it out to start over again.

- Put the valve cover back on, use some RTV on the round part of those half-moon seals.

- Hook up wires, battery and put fuel pump fuse back in.

- Let fuel pump prime before you fire up the car. Listen for any ominous noises. If the car doesn't start, check your plug wires and make sure you've got the distributor on correctly and not switched 180º.

You should really get a FSM. You can find them online. You'll need the torque specs.
