I had been aware that some Nissan models have a similar timing chain guide problem that us 1st-genners are only too familiar with. The problem guide often looks almost identical to ours! But what I didn't know is that Nissan actually issued a factory recall to 240SX owners:

Thanks to member Ricebike for posting that link over in the 240 forum. So the question is, and always has been, why didn't Nissan issue a recall on the Q's? Kinda feels like Mom and Dad have a favorite sibling, but it's not us!

The stress was lower on the V8 so they assummed it would last till +100k vs around 25-40k on the I4.

It would have cost $25,000,000 vs the less than $6 million it cost to repair and replace engines that failed in warranty and the secret 7year/100k original owner extension.

After the 91Q transmission disaster where essentially all 15,000 trannys got changed fot $20 millionand the ac problems.......Infinti warranty cost were thru the roof.............they hoped to ride it out after all the average new buyer in that segement only keep the car 3 years.

Has they priced the car higher to begin with they would have had more cushion.....the $50k 94 Q was an attempt to make some money back.

The $3-$5k retail price difference vs 90-93 LS400 [of the same year] just reflects the cost of doing the needed updates and repairs between the two models.......an efficient market reflects the true cost of ownership.

Dennis, What was the AC related issue, I know about the transmission issues (3 times) but I've never heard about the AC.

Well that link is dead, and I don't remember the details, just something someone else pointed out. I don't see any recalls on the guides for the '91, but there is a recall on all injectors, among other things. Look them all up at http://www.nthsa.gov
