My car started hissing about 2 days ago and it also sometime rattles in the front around where the fan is. The hissing comes from somewhere in the middle of the engine. I took it back to where I had bought it from and they told me it was the timing chains and along with replaceing the chains the oil pump has to be changed also. He said the parts at his cost would be 220.00 not included labor. The car has 100161 miles on it. I called my mechanic when i got home and asked him about it. When he called me back he said it would be really expensive and many hours, around 25 hours and 2500.00 dollars total. Also he said that the timing chain shouldnt be going bad yet with just 100,000 miles on it. So, needless to say I am wondering if either one knows. Could it be the brackets? I was reading about how they go bad on these cars. I need help please !!!!

You have a '96? Those are not prone to chain guide failure like other Qs. "Hissing"...like air flowing? Sounds like a vacuum leak to me.
