I need to fix my timing chain rattle. I read that guide, but it explains it for the '91 and up models. I have a '90 and I need some sort of walkthrough for how to fix it on my car. Thanks!

the recommended fix is to replace the whole timing chain kit ( since you will haveta remove the timing cover anyways). If you're cheapo, then i guess u can just replace the guides only (not recommended).

basically, the guides were made of plastic, when they wear out/break apart, the chain will then rub into the coolant passages of the timing cover...bad news.

newer kits will have metal-backed guides (there was a TSB/major recall back then about this).

if u know how to remove the timing chain cover to see if the chain-job was previously done, then just do a visual on the cover as well (for any chain contact).

yeah you may want to check them out before you drive more. if it is broken then you will hear it for sure. below is a pic of mine. the motor has had a very easy life and been well taken care of and i am the first owner of it under the age of 30. the original guides were on the chain with 97k on them.the top guide is the plastic guide and the bottom one is the tensioner. if you want some more pics of the timing chain parts go to my pic book and browse thro it. and btw you dont have to replace the chain and the sprockets they are pretty tuff factory. saves you some money. http://nissaninfiniticlub.net/...17500&=

I guess I may have jumped the gun saying that it's my timing chain...but I can't figure out what else it could be. The engine chugs for a bit when starting and makes a clicking noise as I accelerate. the noise gets faster as the engine speeds up...I assume that's the timing chain. Where can I get some metal timing chain and tensioner guides?

u can start w/ the sponsors of this site; they may have better prices even...

or el cheapo aftermarktet timing chain kits can be had too... they're all revised to have metal-backed plastic guides now...

ps: saw your other thread about losing coolant... hopefully the chain didn't cut into the timing cover already

pps: my car's radiator started leaking between the aluminum core & plastic tank... just d/t old age & years of vibration just caused the leak (check that out).
