I'm working on a SR20 right now that I'm tearing down for a timing issue and I noticed that I have a bit of play in the sprocket on the crank. I originally noticed that with the oil pan off and the engine upside down I could move the crank by the crank pulley bolt back and forth a bit without moving the chain before it would "grab" I was a bit worried about this so now that I have the head off and a more direct look at the sprocket there is about 1/16" or less of play at the tip of the tooth of the sprocket. Is this normal? I can't find out how to remove the sprocket so I'm not sure how to inspect the actual keyway for damage.

Here's a crappy video I took of the play to make it clear what I'm talking about:

Its reaaaaly dark so all you can really see are my fingers moving but I hope it gets the point across.

Suggestions? This normal? How to I get the... I guess you would call it the crank collar... off to where I can remove the sprocket and inspect it?

EDIT - crap, posted under my GF's login. Whatever, I will be replying after this as iBang.

Anyone? I'm off to the shop shortly and I'd like to know how to get this thing off at least so I can inspect it. I can't find it in the FSM anywhere.

well to replace that sprocket ur gonna need to remove the crank pulley(use a pulley removal kit from a parts house) and then more than likely the oil pump will have to come off to and then you can peck the sprocket off. but the chain will have to off the cam sprockets and the tensior out..you would be best to buy a timing chain kit and replace everything

Sorry, should have mentioned earlier - the reason that I found this was that I'm in the middle of a timing job anyway. Head is off, front cover is off, chain is off. I just can't get the damn crank collar that's in the way off so that I can pull the sprocket.

well that is hard sometimes when its never been removed, but i used a really skinny flat head to get up under it, and that is pecking with a hammer but be careful to not gaulge the keeper slot up cause u could interfer with it staying in there but good luck with it
