Hello all, I'm sure some of you guys porbably remeber me posting about my trials in trying to get rid of my engine knock. Well to make a long story short I'm changing the timing chain. My bottom guides are broken so I have to.

I was wondering what is the proper way to remove the crank pully. The FSM just says use a suitible puller. I have one but am I suppossed to remove any bolts first? Looking at the fsm it looks like they are just yanking it out. ANy tips you can give would be appriciated.

Sounds good to me but how do you get it to stop turning?

I loosened teh bolt, put the pulley puller on, pulled it til it got close, then loosened the bolt some more.

If you are doing it right, the pulley shouldn't be turning anyway... You're pulling, not rotating... . At least mine didn't turn... but I've removed my crank pulley a couple times already, so it's "loose"

Oh I thought you meant take the big bolt compleatly off before pulling it off with the pully puller. This saterday is when I'll be taking it off and then I'm going to take off the oil pan:).. My new timing chain parts won't be in untill next wendsday but I just want everything to be ready when it comes in.. I miss my 240 soo bad it's been off the road for over a month now.

You ought to be able to take the big bolt off entirely before using the puller, it depends on the size of the shaft on the puller.

if it is too skinny, it will just go inside the crank, but if its thick enough it will press against the outside edge of the crank.

OK I'm trying to remove the crank pully today but I cant get it to stop turning. I have an AUto and I put it in D but it still turns... What am I missing here?

Must be with Manuals when you put it in gear it stops turning. I want to get this timing chain done and my car back on the road. It's been over a month now. If I drive my wives Camry one more time I'm goign to shoot it.

the pulley is turning when trying to remove the pulley itself? or the pulley bolt?

If its the pulley bolt, use an impact to spin it off.

Well I finally got it. When I would try and take it off the whole pully would spin. I wedged a screw driver to lock it in place. Now I'm trying to get the front cover off. I have to say I'm bout ready to just say screw it and put everything back together go take out a loan for 7 or 900 and just take it to a mechanic. I Want to give a big thank you to everyone who has helped me sooo much in this project.

Remember when is time to put the pulley back on it will REALLY start turning with the tightening of the pulley bolt....you need to either jam a big flat tip screw driver in the flywheel, you are going to take the little cover over the flywheel and lock it with the screwdriver or a special wrench that comes for that...(cant remember what is called....) everything else is pretty much trace your steps back and remember to torque everything by the FSM specs....then is Miller time, Baby!!!

The SOHC front cover is easy to get off (huh huh huh huh I said "get off") just put a pry bar on both sides and start prying, but be careful not to warp the front cover.

DOHC you gotta drop the oil pan which is a real pain in the butt.
