Recently my timing chain busted and broke through my valve cover and the section of the engine directly underneath the valve cover (when looking at the engine from the front where the fan is. I know you can replace the timing chain, the sprocket and the valve cover but can that "other" part of the engine be replaced. Please let me know if I can fix or if I need a new engine. Thanx

What did the chain sound like before it broke? did it sound like someone dragging a chain on the ground, or did it just up and pop on you? My engine started making the 'chain on the ground' sound tonight, and it's making me nervous.

Oh, and since your chain is broken, your pistons may have slammed into open valves. the only way to know is to pull the head and inspect everything.

When you say the section of the engine underneath the valve cover, do you mean the front cover over the timing chain or an actual part of the head? Anyway, I can't see how the chain breaking couldn't result in bent valves, but perhaps I'm wrong. I'd definitely open it up, but I'd wager the engine is toast.

The engine was making that dragging noise before it busted. Yes I'm talking about the timing chain cover but I have not removed the valve cover to check the valves. The valves I can see from the broken end of the valve cover all look fine. I don't know. I'mm probably gonna replace the engine or sell the car. (NO MONEY!!!)

Likely your valves contacted the pistons because when the chain snapped it didn't keep everything in 'sync'.

Better look for a used engine. Is it the DOHC or SOHC?

DOHC and I just got another engine for it. Don't know how I'm gonna get in. Anyone know a good shop or mechanic in DC/MD area that'll do the work cheap?
