My motor has got somewhere from 100-125k miles on it (maybe more...mileage is not certain b/c it was a sohc -> dohc swap and we didn't know mileage on the 1993 car)

It's been acting up in idle, but that's nothing new, because it was timed but incorrectly. I do not have a working tach so the idle hasn't been timed yet. It is misfiring, possibly because of the HKS iridium plugs and the stock wires, and sometimes it will die if sitting in idle...it also takes a couple times to crank.

My main question though, is that I hear a kind of ticking/rattling kind of noise when I pop the hood (other than the valve/cam/etc noise) I have been told that one of the timing chain guides has already been removed, but there is one remaining, and that when they go bad, they can be removed, but not replaced...

How accurate is this info, and is this even a correct diagnosis?

Well, if the ticking noise sounds like it's coming from the front of the valve cover, it's probably the chain hitting the guide.

The guide that was probably removed was the easy one (it's right between the cam sprockets). The only other one you can remove is hidden by the cam cover. It's on the passenger side, near the distributor.

To remove it you'll have to pull the plugs, valve cover, distributor and cam cover. Be sure to match mark *everything* and make sure the car is @ TDC when you do this (stuff shouldn't move anywhere, but better safe than sorry).

Also be careful when removing the cam cover as the head gasket extends out and forms a seal between the cam cover and the lower cover. You really don't want to damage that.

If the chain is hitting the guide hard enough to rattle or tap, chances are either the chain is stretched or a tensioner is weak. I'd vote for tensioner.

To fix it right, you should remove the guide, check and if necessary replace the upper tensioner and inspect your chain for wear.

If the above doesn't fix it, either there's a problem with your lower timing chain or you've got low oil pressure (bad pump, leak somewhere, clogged oil passage).

Before you start throwing parts at it, you might want to try to isolate where the sound is coming from and maybe even check your oil pressure.

It could be an oil leak...there is one in cylinder three, not getting to the spark, but on the top of the plug...

the leak by plug number three is just from a bad valve cover gasket. cheap fix and nothing to worry about.

most likely your common chain/guide noise. your chain should last about 200k before it NEEDS to be replaced.
