Ok, im a timing chain virgin who is going to go at it for the first time. Does anyone have any tips, must do's, dont do's etc. or a step by step procedure with pics? This engine is sideways. I hear that i will need to lift the engine slightly, is this true? I need to do this with the engine in place, lifting or lowering a few inches shouldnt be a problem...should it? What tools will i need to perform this task. Oh yeah, 95 altima 2.4 liter 4cyl Sideways

Regards,

I would be very careful if you have never done anything like this before. Not doing things right will cause you more problems than what you have now.

I would swing over to the Altima forums or the KA forums (Can be found by scrolling down the right side of the page) and make sure you have all the right tools, manuals, help, etc...

Good luck, take your time and make sure you follow any shop manual instructions.

And, welcome to NICO.

I've never redone the timing in a KA with it being sideways, but I imagine you're going to be going in through the wheel well. Are you going to be doing both upper and lower?

Yes both upper and lower. Im not sure that i need to even do the chains, maybe just the tensioner? But it also has one hellova oil leak as well, im hoping its from the timing chain cover??

There's a link to the factory service manual in my signature. You just have to pick the appropriate year Altima, and it SHOULD be in there (probably under Engine Mechanical). I'm not sure anyone has done a step by step how to article for the Altima. You can probably find one for a 240sx though... a lot of it will be the same once you get into the nitty gritty.
