Timing belt?? Whats the big deal?

I am over due for a new timing belt and was wonder why I couldnt tackle this job on my own. I have never done one before but I am low on funds and the belt itself is relatively cheap. I wouldnt mind spending a weekend and saving some cash. Is there any special tools I need? I have a 2000 Frontier 5-speed 3.3L 4-door. Is this job as hard as people make it seem? Does the engine need to be extracted from the truck like in some cars? I am pretty handy and have loads of tools. Is it the time that make people pay to get this done or is it not posible to do w/o a lift? I am clueless as to why people say its such a hard job. Looks like its pretty easy to get to?? Any help is appreciated. Also if there are any specs I should know about my truck in particular. Thanks~~

It's doable for the novice, but it has to be done right to avoid major engine damage.

You'll be pulling out the radiator, all the accessories off the front of the engine, belts, hoses, etc., and the front engine cover to get to it.

While you're in there, it's a good idea to replace the pulley as well as the water pump and all belts/hoses since you have them off anyways.

It's definitely a doable weekend job provided you have all the parts lined up. Just work slowly and methodically and keep track of how everything comes apart.

Having an FSM doesn't hurt either. Maybe BigBird can come on and scan in the pages you'll need.

Thanks Desert~ Any info on the "pulley"? Is it just a "pull out the old, pop in the new" type job? Your other post was very helpful also, Ive been putting 5qts in there for about 3 years now, maybe I should ween down a bit? Maybe try 3.5 and start it up? Thanks~

3.5 is all she takes to register full on the dipstick.

As for the pulley, the correct term is a tensioner.
