Timing belt change does not require the distributor to be touched at all - I did the timing belt on my '98 Pathfinder this past weekend, trust me. Maybe the valve cover gasket was changed, which requires removal of the distributor cap so the intake plenum can be removed? (I say this because I've researched it a bit - I have to do my valve cover gaskets before my wife refuses to get in the car - the smell of burnt oil puts her off...).
Timing belt is supposed to be changed at about 106K miles. As I said above, I just did mine at 168K and was pissed that it looked almost brand new when I took it out... I looks like it could have gone to 250K easy.
