OK, I took everything apart and checked everything out, and my t-belt was just WAY loose. I think the tensioner spring is not as tight as it should be. Is the tbelt suppesed to be tight, like you push on it and its tight? I read on Skylines down under forum that when you twist it at the longest part, it should twist 45*, and have about 5mm deflection. That is WAY tighter than it was when I did it per the fsm. any feedback?

Why do you keep making a new thread about the same topic. Put your questions and results into the same thread so that its easier to find a solution. It gives people background on the problem that you have and what you have tried to resolve it.

And what do you mean "is the timing belt suppose to be tight"? Of course its suppose to be tight.

It is a different issue. I just want to know how tight the tension should be on the timing belt. the last two threads I posted are more in reference to possible damage caused by the timing belt slipping a tooth. You may be right, but I felt it was a separate issue which did not require background info.

I know the belt is supposed to be tight, as the fact that it has a tesioner implies there is tension on the belt, thus making it "tight." Now all I need is someone to Quantify that. HOW TIGHT? That's all I need to know. I have fixed everything else I inquired about in the previous threads. The procedure to set the tension in the FSM left the belt "Loose" so much that there was free play in the belt. for example, you could rotate the crank pulley a few degrees left and right, and the cam pulleys did not move. this did not seem right, even though I followed the correct procedure.

Case in point: Can anyone quantify the tightness of the timing belt, ie, five mm deflection, or a 45 degree twist?

If I posted too many threads, sorry. I will work on that. Thanks!!!

Thats what I used, the 45* twist. If you can move your crank pulley and it doesnt move your cams youre in trouble.

Just to give you an idea. I set mine a touch too tight once and the tensioner pulley didn't spin. The belt simply slid across it. So I loosened it a hair and it worked fine. Don't sweat it so much. Just make sure it's tight enough to not skip teeth and loose enough to spin freely. The tensioner is technically supposed to self-tighten the belt, but I always ended up setting it a tad tighter due to the give in the spring.

Its its too tight it will whine like hell.Take up the tension by turning the crank pully clockwise a ittle and you should have approx 45deg twist on the log leg up to Inlet cam.

I back up and lock down the tensioner, line up my marks, install the belt (I always have to rotate the gear a degree or two clockwise to line up the teeth), pull all slack over to the tensioner side, release the nut and let the tensioner snap the belt tight, stick an allen wrench in the tensioner and give it a gentle tug tighter and then let it settle back, lock down the tensioner being sure to notice if it shifts, slowly rotate the engine one full revolution and bring the marks back up and ensure they still line up as they should, have a rum&coke and make naughty with the first cute girl I see.

Theres my problem. I have the rum and coke, do the cute girl, then try to work on the car. Thanks for squaring me away!
