Hi, I posted this in the technical section of the maxima/Infiniti and am not sure if thats the correct place. I am posting this here as well. Sorry about the mess.

Hi,After searching the web for a decent Infiniti J30T forum, I chanced upon this great website.I own a 1993 J30T with 265K on it. The car has been running very well with a couple of major repairs. I have owned it for 3 years and driven about 90K.Had very little service of the car when I purchased it. Have tried to keep well maintained. Recently though, I have benn having some problems. It started 3-4 weeks back. Used to be intermittent but then became pretty regular. While driving, the engine would turn off sometimes. Used to happen on low RPM's (when stopped at red lights or driving in a traffic jam) and only when it was humid but it developed into a major problem where it didn't really matter what the weather was like.The car wouldn't start once it lost power. There was a lot of hesitation when it did start up and if u gave it some gas, there were black fumer coming out of the tail pipe(serious black fumes) and the car would vibrate. If you kept at it (let it idle while in park with hesitation) the engine would rev up on its own in a couple of minutes. If you put it in drive, sometimes the car would be ok and sometimes it would lose power again.I finally took it to a mechanic (the first one I encountered) and the guy said that the timing belt might need replacement. The car was giving problems just starting up now so I told him to go ahead. The car seems fine now but I have been trying to do research on the problem and I can't say I have seen any of the posts with a problem like mine. Just wondering if the shop "took mefor a drive" or could a problem like this be related to the timing belt issue. I haven't replaced the timing belt since I have had it.I know this is a long read but hopefully I can get some answers since this site seems to have a lot of J30T specialists.

Thanks again for all the help.Cheers

Welcome to NICO!

265k on the car, how many trannies?

I think what your experiencing is an injector/fuel pump issue, and you DEFINITELY need that timing belt replaced if it hasnt been done.

Thats what I have gathered after I got the timing belt replaced and read through the articles/posts on this wonderful site but the problem seems to have dissapeared and the mechanic has told me that it shouldn't happen again.I just have this nagging suspicion that he took me to skule and on the pretext of changing the timing belt did something else and charged me for the labour.Cheers

I owned a couple Mazda 929s, and when the timing belt was ready to fail, the car would sometimes just die at a stoplight or when slowing down. I'd have to start it up again and go on my merry way.

It finally broke when I let off the gas while I was coasting downhill. The shop showed me the remains of the belt, which was a mess of what looked like someone threw a rabbit through some fan blades. Looked like a pile of fur, basically.

The Mazda 3.0 SOHC V6 is also a non-interference motor, unlike the J30.

Infiniti claims the T-belt replacement every 70K, you are very lucky. Stalling is usally a sign of induction problems but I would go with Jesda on this one, I don't have a lot of hands on with the timing belts.-Joe

If timing is off that bad from a loose belt and or tensioner, then stalling would occur. I think you definately needed replacement. When you say 265k I'm assuming you mean Kilometers, not miles. Either way, I would consider yourself extremely lucky that you didn't lose the belt with an interference motor.

265000km = 160k miles

The replacement timing belts are good for 105 k miles. The 93-94 were good for 60k miles. If you got 265000 km out of an original 100000km belt, consider yourself very lucky. Perhaps that original belt was stretched out which was throwing the things out of wack.
