I was just at my mechanic and i was told i need a new timing belt(well...not "need" but i am "due") anyway, i was quoted about 400. This seems kind of high, but on the other hand i know that timing belts can be annoying. THis was for parts and labor, if this seems too high or weird to anyone please reply, any advice would be helpful.

the part costs about $35 - $45. It is essential to the car's well being. If it fails the engine will self-destruct - $3500 - $4500.

Replacing the part is time consuming though. $400 is fair. The mechanic will try and talk you into a water pump at the same time, listen to him carefully.

Obviously this isn't a part that you just wait for it to go bad and replace one it's clearly broke. The service manual will explain at what milage intervals it should be changed.

Ask your guy WHY he thinks it needs replaced. Write it down and repeat it here or ask someone else you trust.

Water pumps are routinely replaced on cogged-belt driven camshaft designs because the labor is already 90% done, and thus the pumps are usually designed to have a lifetime slightly more than the belt change interval.

I was told a check list of items to inspect/replace when replacing the timing belt

Water pumpTiming belt tensioneridler pulliesCam shaft sealsfront crank shaft sealall assesory belts

This is due to the labor involved because the same tear down is mainly required when doing these items

I paid $360.00 locally so that is not bad. The local nissan wanted $600.00 and infiniti wanted $1200.00

The timing belt is very important on this car. This is considered a zero tolerance engine. This means if the crank moves independent of the cams (when belt is broken) pistons will meet the valves and damge will occur and it is not cheap.

If you have the time and skill it is a diy job

The following is a reference on how to do it based on the sister car the 300ZX http://www.ttzd.com/tech/timingbelttech.html

Do not use the part numbers in this article, call Joe at Scottsdale Inifinit http://www.infinitipartsusa.com for pricing and numbers

I wish I took the time to do it myself because my great mechanic overtightened the assesory belts and I had to replace the ac tensioner pully a month after. At that point I became a true DIY except for major engine and transmission work

Now If I could only convince my wife to let me get a lift

Good luck

Play the risk-of-bodily-injury card. Any idea how many people die every year while changing their brake pads? I don't have a clue, but it does happen. She's probably just afraid that if you get a lift, she won't see much of you anymore on weekends. I'm lucky my girlfriend is so understanding. She thought it a good idea for us to look at a 2-bed, 1-bath house for sale with--*gasp*--a 4-car garage! Wish me luck.

DAEDALUS - you have no idea what you've got there! Elsewhere you describe looking under the hood of the Q with her. WOW!

My wife is great, but she secrets hates the Q in part because she thinks I care more about the Q's moods than hers.

She's "with child" and I hear comments like - "when our baby around are you just going to always be messing around the car instead of playing with her" - "$20 for some tool! you already have too many, what do you need more tools for!" - or the worst is the condesending smile while I'm soldering on a Bose amp at the kitchen table that says "you're cute, but a little stupid aren't you"

(Show of ignorance about to happen) ....... When I first got my Q, I went by the dealer with cash in hand to have the chain changed as a safeguard, and he told me as long as you stay up on the maint (oil specifically) it should last a LONG time. Is there some interval at which the chain should be changed regardless?

the dealer's right. The chains are definately not the weakest link in these engines, expect them to last well over 200K

I do know, and I'm grateful. She's a keeper for sure. As an engineer, she understands that you cannot have too many tools. She understands wear and failure. And she really likes the Q and understands that $2-300/month in tools/parts is not unreasonable. She'll even let me get a garage lift and *buy* me a compressor.

We checked out the house...I think the detached garage is larger than the house itself. It's a fixer, but the price is good. We'll be submitting an offer this week, though that doesn't mean too much in today's market. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks DAEDALUS, I was glad to know the 94's didn't have the guide problems, even happier to know the chain will last a little while. :)

As palmerwnd and I were pulling stuff off his wrecked Q he told me about the different people he was shipping this caliper to that sway bar to. I said you can always tell who's married and who's not. The single guys write "I'll do whaterever it takes to fix my Q!" The married guys "I sure would love to fix my Q!" Good luck with the house, sounds cool!
