Unless I'm mistaken, your car has a chain, and not a belt.

As far as I know, timing chains are pretty much maintenance free...but I've never owned a car with a chain long enough to have to deal with that.

I know the KA had issues with plastic guides, but I imagine that was resolved by 99.

That is a chain and unless the front cover o-rings are leaking or the tentioner and guides are noisy leave it alone this is not a project you want to get into with out experience and a lift. you might get a little rattle from the top of the motor towards the front. this is the top guide and it makes noise remove the valve cover and remove guide dont replace they dont make the part and at the dealer we would always remove it if the cover was off any way. make sure to use nissan red rtv (looks orange) to reseal with new gasket.

The only time you need to replace a chain is if it, jumped timing, or the tensioner or guides are shot in this case you will hear a lot of noise from the front cover.

well the misister us correct. your car has chain. i had to do my 94 gle 2.4l dohc.the parts only cost 150, and i wound up spending over 1k with labor. if you want to drop the motor out, its a project. my advice send it your local mechanic.

but thats just me.

guide does not matter, as a matter of fact, most people just take them off and leave them off when they break. it causes annoying noise, but is a non-vital part.
