Factory engines were all built with a liquid gasket for the water pump and exhaust valve covers. Also a few other parts as well, such as the water lines for the heater core on the back side of the block. And honestly, not sure why. It most certainly was more labor intensive to manufacture the engine using liquid gasket material. So, when I did mine, I ignored the paper gasket and went with RTV. Just assumed that the Nissan engineers had a reason for it.
