just replaced oil pump but i had noticed that the timing belt had done it before this as well. about 5mm of the edge of the belt rides off the front edge of both cam gears. only solution i can think of is removing lower cover and crank sprocket and moving the crank sprocket closer to the block. i just replaced the oil pump, crank sprocket and plate behind the sprocket, about how close should it be to the oil pump? anyone heard of something like this?

Alright smartass...

The crank sproket, if installed correctly SHOULDN'T have any way to adjust how close or far away it is from the oil pump. Did you put the correct washers on the correct side.

Do you like that answer better?

Very important that he have this spacer on or the timing belt will come off eventually.

when i removed the sprocket there was a thin washer with a rectangle cut out between the sprocket and the oil pump. when I installed it again it was also like this. are you guys saying this washer is supposed to be between the sprocket and pulley (in front of sprocket and not behind it?)

There are two spacers! One behind the sprocket, but in front of the oil pump seal and one that is front of the socket which seperates the pulley from touching the sprocket. You appear to possibly be missing the front one.
