Ok so I don't believe my J has ever had the timing belt replaced. I took it to the dealership for an oil change and to get new brake pads today and they said I need a new timing belt soon. I have about 120k miles and they said I should have done the replacement at 105. They want to charge me 1700 dollars. Do I really need the water pump and everything else or can I just buy a belt online for around $40 and have them put that on? I know I need to do something soon since the J is a interference engine or whatever. Any advice would be appreciated.

Most of that 1700 is Labor. They will still charge a chunk just for the belt. When you take all the stuff out to change the belt everything else is right there accessible.I did mine myself over a weekend taking my time.Theres a GOOD writeup on this forum showing every step needed.

I bought the entire kit from InfinitipartsUSA.com for @$400.00, the only thing it did not include were the idlers about $60 a piece, there are 2 of them I think. I had my local mechanic that specializes in Nissan/Infiniti do the job. They charged me 5 hrs or $375. while they were in there they said the one on the idlers should be replaced. A little over $800 for the entire job.

The J has an interference engine. Your on borrowed time. Should the belt give, your looking at bills for a brand new engine. Get the belt done ASAP!!! If your not having an Infiniti dealership do the work then take it somewhere where the mechanic has experience working on the 300zx engine (The J and 300zx share the same engine). You don't want to mess up the timing belt change. Yes you need a new waterpump. To save some cash, contact Joe at everythinginifiniti.com. Tell him your from the Nicoclub J30 forums and he will likely swing you a deal on parts. Like Yoda said most of the timing belt change is labor cost. The new belt is Kevlar and will last for a very long time.

I would just continue to drive it, when the belt breaks, junk the car and buy another one{ for less than the cost of the belt job} these are now priced like disposable vehicles.

PoppycockI did mine for less than 150 in parts and a weekend of taking my time.

Don't do your oil change for 10k and thrash your Q They are pretty cheap now as well.

Get it ??

big difference between investing another $80in an oil change and wasting $1700 on a old outdated tired J.

And your Q isn't outdated ??

13 years is me thinks.

My point was the T belt change is easy .. just takes time.

And if Im not mistaken Q45TECH says the q take 3K a year to keep up to spec.Do you spend that on your Q that's not worth 3K ??

Just curious actually.

Just tired of all the Flaming in here .We love or J's and Im gonna get 300K outta mine .Hide and watch.

Timing belt was difficult but I love to work on my J. Camseals were leaking oil so I did the belt when I replaced them. I was at 125 when I did it. Is it true that you should do it at 105? and when should it be done again?
