I just received my 1997 Infiniti J30 timing belt kit from http://www.infinitipartsusa.com

This one:

I noticed the kit does not come with the idlers. While I am having everything else replaced in there should I also replace these?

They look like # 21 in the image link below:

Also does anyone else have any recomendations on replacing anything else in this area while it is all apart so i can save some $ on the labor?

If your doing all that work, you should also replace your engine solenoids. They go with age.

Uh Aren't the solenoids near the Valves ??Don't have to dig that deep for a T-Belt swap.

You do get one idler bearing with the auto-tensioner.

Check the feel of the sealed bearings in your camshaft position sensor. Mine had dried out/were rough and they are a common size, but getting things apart without damaging the laser cut wheel inside is VERY risky/tricky.

Have the radiator and transmission cooler removed and cleaned, and maybe the transmission flushed with a filter change?

I don't know which solenoids driverdriver is referring to.

Question to anybody that has changed their timing belt, did you replace the upper & lower idler pulleys which are not included in the "timing belt kit" from Infiniti parts USA?

Anyone know how many miles they are rated for?

I am at 107,000 mile on my 97 J30.

Thanks in advance!

Had I known about them I might have changed mine at about 168K when I did my timing belt, but like you say they aren't included in the kit and they are pretty expensive.

The camshaft position sensor is a $300+ part that has a laser cut wheel inside of it along with an optical sensor and the two sealed bearings. I got determined and opened mine to replace my rough/dried sealed bearings, but bent the laser cut wheel in the process. I managed to straighten it and things ran fine afterward. Later I specially modified a large bearing splitter tool to get things apart without damaging anything.

Mine is a '93 J30 and everything should be newer/better on your '97, plus your mileage is low too.

Unlike some other things in life the first time takes longer and 60K miles/about 10 years from now will probably seem like another first time (dreaming out loud), but I should still have all of the necessary tools (those made of metal, at least).

Well this could be the last timeThis could be the last timeMaybe the last timeI dont know. oh no. oh no
