I have a '95 J30t. My timing belt cost about that much. I also had a lot of other things done as well. I had the water pump replaced, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, idle pulleys, etc. Not cheap but better to have things replaced while they have it apart then pay labor later. Something to think about.

I don't think $300 is too bad for a timing belt replacement but then again I do not know as much as some of the other people on here so you might value there opinion more.

Good luck whatever you do.

That is about right for a non dealer quote

Have the cam seals inspected and replaced if nessesary

Hoses are easy to change at this time

Inspect waterpump and replace if needed

Have the timing belt tensions pulley checked as well as the idler pullies

Replace the thermostat at thsi time, very cheap part

Had mine done about a year ago and cost me $380 but everything was in great shape.
