hey i just got my 91 300zx and have come to realize that the timing belt hasnt been done recently(at least since 85xxx miles).my z sits at 115xxx miles right now.i have the timing belt and i am going to do it myself.i was wondering if someone could tell me roughly how long this job takes considering i need a vehicle to drive to work mon-fri.is this a weekend job?or a couple hour job? i have never done a timing belt so i do not know how long this should take.

I see a couple red flags in your post. Age aside, your timing belt is fine at only 30,000 miles of use. How long ago was it installed? Why are you wanting to replace it so soon?

I haven't had the (dis)pleasure of doing a t-belt on the z yet but even on a Honda it's a b****. I'd say it's a weekend job at a minimum. I'd be concerned with doing it yourself judging by the questions you're asking (not being rude).

Your post is unclear - are you planning on replacing the tensioner and seals as well?

i want to replace it because im unsure of when it was done.i couldnt get a clear answer to the question of when or if it was done ever and i want to do it for peace of mind.
yea i figured it would be hard, but im not a newb on working on cars its just that i have never done a timing belt before so im kind of worried about time.

possible to do over the weekend if youre comfortable workign on cars. theres a write up on tt.net. its well worht the trouble to do the full 120k service tho. but if youre ona time restraint, id say try to find a friend to help out. might as well do evrythign sicne evrythign is right there...

That kit from Z1 posted above, plus the idler pulleys would be ideal.

I'd suggest getting some help from a Z guy who's done it before. I did everything by the book and took my time (2 days) and it still didn't work right. About a month later my block is on a stand in the garage, my heads are at a machine shop, and I'm looking at close to $1,000 in repairs (that's only parts). This isn't something you want to mess up.

If you know what your doing it takes 4.5 hours start to finish (complete running car to complete running car) if you've never done it before then id say give yourself about 3 hours to leisurely so you don't break anything take everything apart, another 3 hours to fight with the belt (u might get lucky and get it on there easy but be prepared). So yeah give yourself a weekend.
