So I was disassembling everything, Im rebuilding the lifters as I have the notorious tick, but my timing belt was shot, and actually snapped before I was able to get all the marks all aligned. Ive read a bunch of guides that all tell you to get this aligned first or you're screwed. So now my pro question is: what do I do? Can I put the new belt on and do the aligning, then take the new belt back off and put it on properly? Obviously I cant set each sprocket independently. Is there anything I can do while the cams are off though to help?

Why exactly can't you just set the cams where they need to be? Especially if have them off (since you're rebuilding the lifters).

First, it sounds like you missed grenading your engine by a few revolutions. The answer to your questions is yes. Once you pull the cams out, the valves will all close. You can then rotate the crank shaft to TDC for #1. After you finish the valves and seal everything up, then you can re-install your cams where they would have normally been.

Thanks, and yes Im extremely lucky the belt didnt snap in use, I think the last owner skipped the 180k belt replacement.
So I should be good, Ill update my progress next week.
