Has anyone had any problems with the timing belt sliding back and grinding away. I was doing some basic maintenance today and noticed some smoke coming from my upper timing belt cover. I took it off to find the belt sitting ~1-2mm back from the edge of the cam gears and there was burnt belt on the inside of the cover. Let me know what I should do to prevent this from happening. I have a new belt I am putting on tommorow.

You may be missing the belt sheild that goes under the crank cog. (flat metal disk) With that in place and the belt at the proper tension it should be virtually impossible for it to walk backwards.

It is on there... so I guess there is not enough tension?

Has to be a loose belt then.

Tensioners are new OEM. Does anyone have another belt shield? I just noticed mine has a bend in it near the key way.

The most important thing to remember when eating belts is to stop chewing when you reach the buckle.

I figured that. I don't understand why it started doing this all of the sudden. So if I didn't tension the belt all the way that could be the problem? I am sure I did, who knows...

You can get them at a dealer. I did. Same as Pulsar and i think its there for obvious reasons. It cost about 5 bucks iirc.

five dollars!!!!!! There isn't a part here in Germany that doesn't require you to sell your kidneys and they usually want both. Damn a head rebuild estimate I got was 1700 euros (or 2000 bucks). That wasn't even replacing all the valves. AWWWW man you guys have it good. Luckily I can still order my parts from the States. I just wish I didn't have to wait for shipping sometimes

UPDATE: I picked up my new timing belt from Titan today. Pulled the front apart and found that there was some grease on the belt that was causing it to slide around on the the lower gear, which was eating the belt. I cleaned and degreased the cam gears, lower gear, tensioner and idler. It seems to be fine now. The piece we were talking about was fine when I pulled it off so that was not the issue.

Over tightening the belt will cause it work itself off the pulleys too. I did that, and it ate right through
