Ok 2 days ago i went to do the timing belt/tensioner/waterpump on my 84 300zx turbo. Everything went smoothly TDC was esablished on cylinder 1 belt off, new belt on. Then the problem happened. while turning the drivers side cam with a wrench, the cam gear slipped on the belt because it wasnt tensioned enough. We were turning it to check to make sure nothing hit on the engine. So we put both Cam gears and crank sprocket back to where they are supposed to be and put the belt back on correctly again. Put everything back on all gaurds and pulleys and go to start the car and all it does is crank and crank but doesnt fire. Ive checked every single spark plug and they are wet with gas. Then i checked to make sure they all fired and they did when connected to the plug wire. Then i verified that all the timing marks are right on. when the car is in TDC for cylinders 1, and 6 all the marks line up correctly. The distributor lines up on cylinder 1 when it is in TDC for cylinder 1. Is there somethign im missing? When i try to start the car with the fuel pump disconnected the car stumbles and coughs but wont start. The second i reconnect the fuel pump the car wont even stumble, it just cranks and cranks and nothing happened. No valves are hitting either. I know the cylinders are/were flooded because there is a gas smell in my oil and the spark plugs were all covered with gas. So i cleaned them off and tried again. No change. Any help is appreciated.

thanksben

You likely disturbed the head temp sensor connector that is right near the thermostat housing kind behine the timing cover. unplug the end of the subharness near the passenger side of the intake. The subharness leads down to the head temp sensor. Take an ohms reading on that harness. if it comes up open circuit [usually an I on your meter] you have a poor connection with the head temp sensor. You can get it started like this. hold you gas pedal to the floor and crank the engine untill it fires up. As soon as it does let up on the gas pedal till the pedal is just off idle keeping the rpms above 2000 rpms for a couple seconds then you should be able to completely release the throttle and it should idle.

My chts signal isnt open but i think i definitely flooded my cylinders. I did what you said i held the gas pedal down while starting it and it started and stayed running as long as i had the gas pedal depressed. It was backfiring horribly and the boost gauge was hovering right around 0. Does this sound to you like it is majorly flooded??

yep. once it fired how low did you get the rpm and still kept it running? You need to get an actual reading on that harness. prefferebly when the car is stone cold.
