I replaced the water pump over the weekend, and did the timing belt idler and tensioner while it was out. got everything together, Started it, set the timing and it was great. I followed the fsm to the "T." I thought everything was good, until I noticed a rattling sound coming from the tbelt area. Now I'm not so sure everything is OK. it only happens when the rpm is at about 1000, like when it's idling when cold, or if the throttle is SLIGHTLY applied. also it is missing when you rev it. does it sound like it jumped a tooth? any ideas? I had to re-use my spring, so I am thinking the tensioner did not tighten the belt enough. I am going to check the cam alignment markers later, but wnted to see what the Skyline Wizzards thought. I am starting to think I am cursed with a wrench.

um.. do not turn your motor on again...... remove the timing cover and inspect, check the timing marks on the cams in relation to the belt, remove the bottom cover as well to check the crank gears marks too. Hopefully you didnt miss a tooth....

I second that. Make Damn (with a capital 'd') sure that your timing belt isn't off. You might be able to get away with a tooth, but that's cutting it close to piston-valve contact.

It took me a couple tries the first time to get the timing belt tensioner spring seated correctly, so double check that.

What exactly does the rattling sound like? Metal on metal? Does it match the valves closing? Could it be that your lifters haven't bled or have you run the motor before swapping the timing belt?

Get a FSM and adjust the belt following there instructions, Tensioner spring DOESN"T set the tension!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have to set it manually by following the FSM.....

the fsm says to loosen the tensioner, turn the crank twice, tighten the tesioner, and the tension should be set. that is exactly what I did. everything was lined up. I had been driving it for 2 days now, and noticed it yesterday. the only way I can describe the sound is DDDDDDDDDDD. not to be confused with dee dee dee (Carlos Mencia). and it is not the lifters.
