Are there any indications of a timing belt in need of change?

I'm getting a whining sound from the engine bay that noticably transfers into the cabin. It is proportional to the speed of the engine. I was thinking maybe a pulley but I can't identify a location for the sound.

Any suggestions appreciated

How many miles on the car? I think the '94 has a kevlar reinforced belt and the change interval is 105K miles (on the '93 it's a 60K interval).... wait for the J30 people to confirm (I have a '92 Q45).

Pullies usually squeal or screech at higher rpms. I'm not sure if that's the same thing as whining for you.

What major service has been done to date? Now is a good time to start being PROACTIVE with maintanence, not waiting for things to break.

Can you pin point the area? I use a x-mas wrapping tube to get in to hear better.

I have a whining too but it is caused by the goodyear gatorback accessory belts I had to throw on because I could not get dealer belts in time. I have dealer belts waiting for my next major servicing

I could not exactly pinpoint the area so I removed the PS belt and drove and it went away. PS working fine and it started just after I put those dam belts on. BTW the dealer belts are 2 times thicker than goodyear and cheaper

I have heard that the tensioner and idler on the timing belt can cause a whine also so try to pinpoint it as close as you can before doing anything major.

If not decisive, get new belts from scottsdale and replace and see if that helps. When changing the PS belt you will need to remove the bolts holding the PS reservoir from the wall to have enough flex to remove the belt.

Also the AC tension pully can cause this too as I have replaced this too.

Post to let me know how it went. Just learning on this car so every bit of input is great.

That is correct on the mileage for changing the timing belt ( 93 models at 60k ), and ( 94 models at 105K ). I would use a stethescope and try to isolate the noise. If a stethescope isn't available, remove the drive belts one at a time, restart the engine and see if the noise persist. If the noise is still there after removing all the belts, you're looking at removing the cover and further investigating the cause. If the tensioner bearing is faulty, and you purchase a new one from a dealer, it will come with the bracket, pulley and bearing assembled and ready to go. Make sure you remove the bolt that is installed from the factory that keeps the tensioner plunger pushed in during shipping and before installation!!!

It may likely be the power steering pulley, as the steering has been a little stiff. I thought that was probably the cold weather in the NE.

The sound isn't so much a whine, like a belt w/o sufficient tension, as a steady high-pitch humming almost like interference in speakers that aren't grounded though it is definitely coming from the engine bay.

car has 89k, last service was a 60K at 82K.

I'm pretty sure the 94 J30 also has/had the 60K belt.

Get any bearings that are connected with the Timing belt,& do the lot togeather, as this is a wise thing to do.These bearings are internally lubricated, so if some dirt or water gets in, it washes out the grease. The bearing seals will be brittle at 105K as well.
