I need to know a ballpark figure on what I can expect to pay for a new timing belt. Also, my accessory belts are squealing at times as well, so i believe it would be a good time to get those replaced as well. I live in the chicago area so if anyone know of a place that is recommended to have the work done that would be great. Finally, in order to help keep the costs down, do you guys recommend purchasing the parts myself and then bringing them in for service? If so, what parts do I need to purchase for this? Any pointers on this would be great, thank you.

the fan belts are not expensive, about 20$ each, the timing belt is around 80$ (all in canadian dollars from the dealer), depending on your milage, you will probably need a water pump and a timing belt tensioner, if you are mechanically inclined and would like to change the timing belt yourself, e-mail me and i'll send you the procedure, i've been trying to post it online but my ISP doesnt offer enough space. good luck

Just to give you some idea on dealer costs. I had mine done recently at my Infinity dealer (Richmond B.C.) and the total is $1535 Cdn. They replaced the timing belt, water pump and tensioner.

So how do you know when your timing belt is going bad? Are there any tell tale signs?

My car had 180,000 miles on it before it had the belt replaced.

My dealer wanted about $900 to do the job. I got it done for $390 including parts at an independent lexus/infiniti shop.

If the little numbers in the speedometer say "105,000" or more, or "210,000" or more, it's time. You'll know it went bad if half the valves are bent by the pistons walloping them. It's a very bad thing to try and outlive the factory specs.

Here is a question, my 93 J30 had its t-belt replaced by the dealer at 97K for the first time, vehicle now has 123K. What are the chances that they used a kevlar plated belt when they did the t-belt job back in 2003?

I am just curious. I don't plan on going over 150K without another t-belt change.

'93 belts were supposed to be replaced at 60K.Quote » vehicle now has 123K.
You should be good to about 190K.Quote » What are the chances that they used a cavler plated belt when they did the t-belt job back in 2003?
Kevlar. All but certain. The kevlar belts were brought in around..... 94? Supposedly, the old-style belts should have been long-gone by '03. Pull a cover and look for a part number to be sure, it'll be on the outside of the belt. Quote »I am just curious. I don't plan on going over 150K without another t-belt change.
You should be safe for longer than that. As mentioned, if done by the dealer you're in the system. If not, catch as catch can.

The estimated time is almost 5 hours. So whatever the shop charges per hour. Plus, the parts mark-up is usually around 100%. The water pump is right behind the belt. So if you ever have to have that replaced, you will pay the same labor. And the water pump is more money than a timing belt kit. Try to replace the water pump at the same time. Because what you pay now for the timing belt is about what you will pay for the water pump later.

I got on the forums & started researching the required maintenance. I went to the local Infiniti dealer & got the maintenance records printed. There was no record of a timing belt change. Two different brothers owned the car before we bought it. The one we bought it from did not do a timing belt change. He didn’t think the other brother had it done. I got all the replaced parts back & they were in great shape. I may have dodged a major bullet, but often times things are made to last longer than stated. With all the hoopla about getting the belt changed @ 60,000 (93) & 120,000 (95), I wonder how many folks have lost an engine due to a timing belt failure.

I just had mine done last month. Full 60K kit and I paid 340 for parts and 483 for labor. 7 hours total labor for the full 60K kit.
