I just did my timing the other day and could not get it timed to 3 degrees BTDC like the manual and emissiond plate states. I could only get to 10 degress BTDC. Had the vaccum advance disconnected and plugged. Right now I am fulled advanced, it runs ok but on steep hills it sucks, lots of pinging, but I can go full throttle everywhere except on steep hills. Tried retarding it and the hill situation gets better but still pings but I cannot go full throttle anywhere without pinging.
Should I take off the front cover and water pump and recheck the timing chain, cam sprocket setup?
Is there any other way to help this situation out?
I believe the head on this motor has been removed at least once by the previous owner.

Do you currently have the vacuum advance hooked up? If there are carbon deposits anywhere in that line (most likely in the carburetor) clogging it up you won't get full vacuum and won't get your full advance that could cause that. Did you get a timing light on it at idle and pull the throttle and see if the distributor is advancing the right amount or at all?

he doesnt want anymore advance if he's pinging and can't get it to 3deg BTDC at idle.

I'd say you need a timing chain and guides...

disconnect and plug vacuum advance port at carb with idle at around 850 - 900 and set timing with a light. Rotate distributor until it's where it's supposed to be. If you can't get there, you need a timing chain, as the distrutor can only go on ONE way and NOT be a tooth off. Well... I suppose it can if the oil pump is off by a tooth, but this is not likely.

Drive it around with the vacuum advance OFF and see if the pinging goes away. It'll prolly drive like a slug with no advance though...

I thought about driving with the advance unplugged, glad I bought a timing set when I worked at Orielly's.

another thought...

are you sure the vac advance hose is plugged into the correct port on the carb?

It needs to be connected to a a ported vacuum source, meaning it WON'T have vacuum ALL THE TIME. Only has vacuum to trigger the dizzy when it needs it.

If it's connected to a vacuum outlet that has manifold vacuum at all times, it will be fully advanced ALL THE TIME...

Know I mean Vern? :-)

Had same symptoms with the Z20 I had in my super saloon Galant. Retimed the oil pump to sort it out. No problems after that. :yesnod
