I believe the engine needs to be up to operating temperature. Timing light hooked up to cylinder 1 spark plug wire and point to crank pulley. The notches on the pulley should go by 5's and start on the right from 0°. Timing should be listed on the hood but I bet it'll be about 15° BTDC (4 notches from the right if that's how the pulley is setup). I haven't messed with a 2nd gen Maxima but I believe that should be close if not exactly how its setup.
