So, I started lurking the CA boards a month or two ago with the intent to post up my build, but alas I installed one of the pistons wrong (maybe), and the engine had a deadly knock on #4 on startup. Moot Point.

Flash to today, I picked up a whole other CA motorset (nothing wrong with spares right) and got everything together to freshen it up, need to speed this thing along if I am going to be tracking this summer.

Yesterday, I started tearing stuff down, to replace. Got down to the timing belt gear on the crank. It will not come off. Per the FSM it looks like it should just slip off, which is what I am used to, but it is stuck on.

I pry'd a little with a screwdriver, feared I would start shearing the gears. I then attempted using a gear puller, but could not get a good grab onto it because of the casting cover around the crank, it would not let me get a square grab, to line up with the crank bolt, which obviously has a divet to accept my gear puller drive stud.

Any insight on a slick and safe way to pull this off. Every concept of lubrication, and penetrating oil has been applied. Next... heat from a torch? That or the cover for the oil pump is about to see the might of my precision angle grinder (oxymoron?).

Thanks..

John

That gear is a common problem. It's usually rusted on and everyone just cuts it off and buys a new one.

I've been spraying PB Blaster on mine for the last three days in a vain effort to loosen it up, but I think it's going to meet the Dremel soon. A new one from Nissan is only $25 or so anyway...

I've never had a problem with mine, but many others have. You can try to drill and tap the gear and then fab up a plate that will allow you to get a better grab on the gear, but most people end up cutting them off.

yeah my machine shop definitely killed that gear something nice and broke my oil pump in half trying to get it off, but oh well guess that helped me with my decision to get a new pump lol

from years ago I figured out; drill 2 holes > tap > use puller > reuse gear
