Hello all!

I have been debating this issue for quite some time now, and the more that I think about it, the more that I want to move on past my 91 240 coupe. I managed to get a hold of a 1990 RX-7 Turbo with blown apex seals for $800 when I was out visiting my mom in Virginia. She was kind enough to let me put it in her shed until I could figure out something to do with it (I live in Colorado)!

I was doing some research and found that I could get a rebuilt turbo motor with warranty from this place with free shipping and a Stage 1 port job for $2600. I was also thinking that I would swap out the stock turbo for a "disco potato" unit made so popular by the guys at SCC for an additional $1200.

So what do you think? Should I ditch the KA powered, piston swinging 240 for a super sweet rotory that revs for days and still has the "old school cool" look of a late 80's Japanese sports car? I'd hate to abandon my 240 without ever having a tried an SR swap, but............

Any thoughts?

I had a FC3S. Least reliable car you can imagine when you throw a turbo into the mix. As SOON as I graduate and have my own house, my g/f has to understand that I am getting another FC3S as I WILL be doing a mad crazy 20B swap. The FC3S is an awesome car with lots of potential, a GREAT chassis, and one of the best designed motors for racing ever conceived....but the slightest bit of over heating or detonation and your motor is toast. I have seen guys pop engines on an almost bi yearly basis. IF you do get it, put back a tleast $1500 IMMEDIATLY in a saving account or the like for a "I Blew An Apex Seal or Coolant O Ring Fund".

But hell, who needs pistons when you can have 2 Doritos on a stick I always say;)

I think alot of 240 guys share a common love for the 7's too, so this would be a difficult decision for any of us. I would love to have an FC, it's actually what I originally intended to buy, but they just aren't that reliable or cost effective. If you're ready to work on it and take care of it right, by all means go for it, you'll love it. If you need something you can just count on to get around in all the time, then I would stick with the 240.

Thanks for the input guys! I've heard stories about the nature of rotories, and I absolutely love to work on my car; surely I can get reliable daily fun with bonus rotory knowledge to boot.

If I do decide to take that route, I was planning on hooking myself up with an upgraded radiator, FMIC and a large Setrab oil cooler. I don't want to race Ferrari's or anything, just keep it cool and reliable!

We'll see. I need to decide fairly soon as my last semester of college is about to begin. If I'm not swapping out that 13B by mid September than it's not going to happen this year!!

I'm with what everyone else said. Love those FC's, but they are too unreliable for my budget. Maybe someday...

Hope yours turns out well! Post pics!

From your comments you seem to have made you descion already.

Just do us a favor and when you sell the s13, make sure the person is not a ricer. We dont need another riced out s13.

I do like the second Gen 7s.

But I would never sell a 240 for any rx7.

Well, there's a good chance that I would keep my 240 as a daily driver while I had the 7 in the garage with the motor pulled. I'd hate to sell my 240, as I was just thinking that I would start modifying the 7 INSTEAD of the 240.........

We'll see. The money that I would spend on the RX to get it up to snuff could really turn the 240 into something special.

LOL, I guess I'll just have to wait and see what school loans/work study money brings me!!! I need to remember that I still have to pay rent, eat and get gas............

maybe you can look into a V8 swap into a the rx7. all the power you will need and i'm sure its more reliable than a rotary engine.

http://members.tripod.com/~grannys/rx7.html

thats a good site for info. heres some info for all you ppl thinking that v8+rx7 should be a no no

7-23-04...V-8 powered RX-7s in Grassroots Motorsports Magazine... ...The August 2004 issue of Grassroots Motorsports Magazine features quite a few V-8 powered RX-7s that entered their $2004 Challenge event in Florida. The premise of the event is to build the best handling, best appearing, and quickest car possible for a total budget of $2004., including the price of the car and all components. You will be surprised at the wide variety of entrants and how creative they are. Of a total of 76 cars that participated, a total of 9 RX-7s took part in the event, 5 V-8 powered and 4 rotary powered... ...In the drag race portion, all the V-8 RX-7s finished ahead of the rotary powered cars. No surprise here. The quickest V-8 RX-7 recorded a 12.636 ET, the quickest rotary's ET was a 14.323. ...What WILL suprise a lot of sports car people is the results of the autocross competition. The quickest RX-7 finished nearly 4 seconds ahead of the quickest rotary version. Among the 9 RX-7s present in the autocross, V-8 power captured 4 of the top 5 spots. Don't listen to those who tell you that a big V-8 will ruin your handling!!!

rx-7 = just anouther sexy rwd jap car...good choice altho if ur gettin a cheap one be carefull. a kid i know had a first gen and it was the biggest POS and unreliable..and that was without a turbo bein thrown in there. so if u want to risk gettin rid of the good old 4banger truck motor for a rotary, go for it.

CraZy idea... ROTARY 240 ne1?? aw come on.

I don't know about a rotary 240, but i have seen an sr20 RX7. Can't remember which magazine it was in now, but it is possible. The one in the mag was an FD though.
