ok don't flame but I've searched high and low but need an opinion:

ok 96 240, ka24de with clsoe to 110k miles...

coupla months ago I removed the top chain guide (it was metal) hoping it will stop the metal clacnking/clicking sound, but it didn't really stop it (I've learned since then there is another in the front of the engine) - now it seems that the sound appears more often, esp since it's gotten colder - now I know timing chains are nonwear items, but I've also read that timing chains are expected to last 100k+, but of course, being a 240 lover, I plan to drive this car til 200k+ and beyond (fingers crossed),

so my question is time for a new timing chain? read many stories of ppl driving w/ the timing chain tikcing sound for a long time with no problem, just want to make sure.

PS I don't see how the metal guide can break and fall off... I looked at it and didn't see any visible marks.

it is the plastic guide that brakes at the bottom and falls into the pan. if the chain is making noise. the best course of action to take is, remove the front cover and inspect the chain guide and tensioner. inspect the chain links for visable cracks or damage. you do not even need to take the chain of to replace the guide and tensioner. if they are broke cracked or what ever replace them and put back together. if you do this read up on chain installs here and then have at it. just remember to make sure all your timing marks are right on before removing the chain or other related parts.

thanks,1. any thing I can do to find out if the plastic is starting to break? 2. I removed the top metal guide, I've heard this won't affect anything, and 97-98models came w/o these, but I just want tomake sure.

thanks again.

its really hard to see down in there since you have the idler gear for the 2 chains in the way. you almost have to remove the cover to see it.

yes the peice you tossed was omitted nissan actually issued a recall or TSB to remove it and discard it. it is not nessesary. It was what we call over engineered..lol in other words an engineer was lacking something better to do and thought it would actually help.

the upper chain on my 95 had two guides. both should be removed. one is on top between the cams . the other is on the distributor side of engine. i just replaced my chains ,tensioners and lower guides. the only part that had any sign of wear was the upper tensioner. 140k. replace the upper tensioner and remove the 2nd upper guide{if you engine has one]. this may be all you need. my upper tensioner had grooves in it. the lower ones looked fine. since i was that far into the teardown i replaced it all.
