Well, my transmission looks nasty and most likely only has a few more thousand miles left in it. It's the origional and has lasted 255K, which is outstanding!! I have a 92 Q45a which I've decided to convert from active to reg suspension. My Rack & pinion is leaking as well. I priced some transmission's and can not believe how ridiculously expensive they are, so if anybody has something for a 92 please let me know.

Can I use a 90 thru 93 transmission in my 92? I can't find any Rack & pinion's so I'm clueless there. Any help is welcomed.

For both, your best source is http://www.everythinginfiniti.com .

Used, local rebuilts and after market are all short term and a waste of money.

The five speed Lexus and BMW range from $5K - $7K. The Q four speed costs about what my Acura four speed did. I would say it is a bargain when purchased from Joe.

That's a big .. "yeah but?" I was prepared to see something from $1000 to $1500, but I guess I'm not blessed with money trees to buy from Joe right now. I would love to do so and if I had the cash I would. I was ready to get the $1300 suspension conversion kit from him but this came up.

I couldn't find the Rack & pinion on the web site. Is it listed under another name or combination of names?

Not everything is on the site. Best to call. Unfortunately, $1K -$1.5K is Aamco and Cottman territory. Don't go there!

Factory remanufactured from Joe is about $1.8K + shipping after core is returned (use ForwardAir if you can). Then install and fluids, rear support (~$72 + exhaust hanger), engine rear main seal (~$10).

Better to park it and save, or sell blood.

check the above link...he is in Decatur, AL and has a 115K 91 Q45 that he is parting out with a transmission that he says works....might be worth the day or so drive to get a cheaper alternative given your options....I got a shop to do a $350 R&R transmission swap, but I think $500 is more practical...also you should replace the rear main seal along with the swap.

I totally agree with that statement.

These Q's have some expensive parts. Let me rephrase that, "very expensive parts." Joe is a good connect to have when you want factory parts and non factory prices.

I know some guys will hate this but sometimes I have thought about getting back into a maxima. I love the Q but dread the day something catastrophic comes down the pipe.

Redman, tihs is something you have to GO BIG OR GO HOME (or in this case stay home :) ).. You dont want to cheap out something like this, UNLESS you can find something with a 3 year warranty that covers parts AND labor (aamco doesnt cover labor!).....

I would still go with Joe, or even ebay.. Many JDM units have gone for under 500.. if it lasts you a year I think your in good shape!

255 thousand miles on an early q transmission is awesome! mind if I ask your maintenance secrets? if you added an auxillary cooler, and at what mileage?how often did you flush the fluid and what type did you use?this must be a record for transmission life!

Assuming $2,550 to replace, including other sundry parts, about $0.01/mile, less maintenance, is cheap.

The transmission cooler was put on about 250K so the car went most of it's life without one. The Fluids were changed as per maint specs by previous owner. I don't believe she tore up and down the roads and I know from her and the dealer she used to go to that no transmission work was ever done besides reg. maint. Only the fuel pump was ever switched out. The drive shaft is origional and everything else has been done by me, myself and I. She runs so sweet you wouldn't believe me unless you saw the Odometer mileage.

I will be searching high and low to get a good deal without cheaping out. I totally believe these engines are invulnerable or industructable if properly maintained. transmission did pretty well too! Car is at the age where everything needs to be changed if I want to keep driving it and that's what I have been doing. I don't intend to stop.

Thanks rsiwicki, I'm trying to get up with him. Now how about that Rack & Pinion? Is that something I can do when I do the suspension conversion or should I say would it be easier to do the two at the same time? I'll call joe about the R&P tomorrow.

Never seen a 90-92 Q transmission that lasted 255k, sure it wasn't changed under warranty in its early life. The dealer could have swapped in 5 hours but there would be a record in the master file.

Thanks, I shot him an e-mail.

I have found a rebuilt transmission for $550 from another NICO member, in suppossed good shape. I'll have to get a confirmation on that however.

Positive, as I have all the records for the car from the Dealer. Biggest thing was the fuel pump. Drive shaft is origional as well and chainguides are good! I've got alot to look after. I've probably tore the car up more since I've had it then the first owner.

I'll have to get you guys some pics. Looks like Jesda's Q.

What does chainguides "are good" mean? if they have not been replaced, they are certainly NOT GOOD!

Redman-

See my post in parts for sale. I still have the trans. I have been contacted by some members, but the offers have been under the core charge of $350.

The problem is location- we are very far away. Sorry you didn't need it when I was in Maryland.

As you know this has to go by truck, and depot to depot is best. It costs a fortune to get it picked up at a residential address.

I've been told 100K is about average.

Chain guides were looked at and are not cracked or broken. To me that means "good" for such an old engine.

I've contacted Glenn and he has a transmission. It's a matter of getting something good from someone people trust over taking a chance with something your not so sure about. Glenn has friends here, so I'm leaning that way. I'll have to get a drive shaft from Joe and the R&P as well.

fxjackso I'll check your post. How is your transmission? How many miles does it have on it.

How many miles on the transmission. Didn't AZhitman get that from you? I'm all ears and I think it's about $220 to ship your "paperweight". Your post must be old because I can't find it. Anyway let me know the condition of the transmission.

Ok, I see we have lost more post..... Let me re-ask my most recent questions.

Since I will be replacing both the transmission and the drive shaft I'm curious as to what else should be done. Through reading past transmission threads I've seen two interesting things about the rear main seal.

1- Check & Change2- Leavi it aloneWhich is it?

Since I'm doing the Drive shaft the transmission mounts should be changed as well correct? Filters and fluids,,,... 14 quarts of Mobile 1 for the new transmission. What else should be done?

Change it. It is a ten dollar part with a $400 labor charge if you are not dropping the transmission.

Ok that's one for changing it. Thank you. Why would someone say not to change it? I'm just trying to understand the pros and cons. I mean it's been 255k. The transmission comes with torque converter which i forgot to mention. Is there anything else since I'm going to be under there.....

Rear exhaust hanger bracket.

Who said not to change the rear seal? No one on this board, I hope.

aaacomp said I didn't need to or at least it wasn't necessary. Just want to get this done right. I know everyone likes doing transmission work and can't wait to replace their transmission, so I just want to tap into all that knowledge and not have to go back in and fix things. All at once would be better. Thanks again.

While you may not "need" to replace it now, it is far better to be proactive and blow the $10 for the new seal instead of repeating the labor in the future to replace it when it leaks.
