so i checked out my local muffler shop and they charge $200 for any muffler, piping, and installation.

i was thinking about 2.5" piping with a magnaflow muffler (similar to the stillen one)

what do you guys think?

i dont think they mandrel bend though :\

Just be careful about putting too large of an exhaust pipe. You want to make sure that you have enough pressure through the pipes so that your engine does not incur problems with extra stress due to the extra force it will take it to release the exhaust...

(think: blowing through a small vs. large straw: it is too hard to blow through a small one, but blowing in too large of one tires your lungs out.)

Also, the 1.8L engine may not have the right note for the frequency that a 2.5" pipe would produce; that's were the token ricer "coffee can" sound comes from. If you match it with an exhaust about .5" to .75" wider than stock, you should be good to go!

Good luck to you

i would not recommend 2.5". i don't think you will have enough back pressure and u will actually lose performance... just get 2.25 or 2

Like others have said, on such a small motor, 2.5" is a bad idea. Bigger is not always better (quite the opposite in many cases). The car will just sound like a Honda-ized fart box on wheels.

Go no larger than 2.25" OD. And don't use a stupid megaphone muffler.

The only cars that would need an exhaust that large are either forced induction or big n/a engines. Some cars are designed to function better with a little back pressure. My first car, a 1987 Chevy S10 I-4, didn't have a cat. As soon as we had to put one on for the new inspection regulations it actually performed a lil better.

BY NO MEANS AM I SAYING NOT TO DO IT. The size you are wanting is too large for a small displacement I-4. You should be fine with 2in. We're talking about a V here, not some 15psi, twin turbo, fire-breathing monster here. Same thing applies with mandrel bent. That's something you should only be worried about in high hp or forced induction applications. In those applications the less resistance of a Mandrel bent exhaust is helpful. 1.8 liter I-4 with only 100hp+? Not so much.

my opinion is 2" from cat back, nice resonator(not a glass pack) and a magnaflow muffler(2"in 21/2"out) and tip.tanabe uses 2.16", stillens is ~1/2 larger then stock

i built mine with 2.25" i.d. without a resonator. actually i used a magnaflow 2.25" in/out 6" diameter and 14" long muffler and put it where the resonator sat so it looks stock till u start it. the bends actually give it a deeper note during exit cause it has to travel a bit further till it exits. my mileage increased by about 2.5 mpg but thats with an AEM intake as well done at the same time.
