Hi

I need to replace my passenger side tie rod end for my 320, I'm hoping it's the same as the 520/521/620 for sourcing the part. Havent done anything like this before so I need everyones advice on how to do it right and easy. I know everyones got their tricks to do something to make it easier. Special tool?

If anyone can walk me through that'll be soo appreciated.

Thanks heaps in advance

Rob

If you were to buy a special tool it would be a ball joint fork. Another way of getting your ball joint out is to put a dolly or 2lb hammer against one side of the steering arm (where the ball joint bolts through it) and belt the other side with another hammer. It's a little ruff but it works a treat. The ball joint will literally pop out. Once you have got the ball joint out the hard work is over. Simply undo the tie rod end making sure you either take a measurement eg locking nut to the end of the tie rod thread (inboard end) or count the threads that are exposed. This will get your allignment close enough to be able to drive it to a suspension place to get the alignment done properly. Good luck

are the tie rod ends same with the 520 and 620s?

just in case they dont have a listing for 320

is it advisable to replace both tie rod ends or just the worn one?

I've got a 520 Manual and on the steering linkage diagram

cross rod socket is the same as outer tie rod end?

the one that connects on the Cross Rod Bar right below the sump

I just want to buy the right part and I've heard that each side is different like the RH side's thread is different from the LH side? is this true?

also tried Repco and they dont even have a listing for 320 and 520

is 620 the same?

I'm putting my money on 9 & 10 like you said. I looked in my b210 manual and my morris minor manual and the "tie rods" all look similar. Here's a pic of a tie rod end off a morris minor (rack and pinion). On my morrie the tie rod threads are both right handed threads but the hub nuts are definately one right and one left thread.

ok thats good to hear

now is it an inner tie rod or outer tie rod?

I called repco and they dont have a listing for 320 and 520

but Autopro has Outer Tie Rod Ends for $20.24 each

s*** thats cheap for a tie rod end. My pintaras were $150 each. I suggest you ask Autopro if they are on the shelf so you can have a look at them. The other thing you could do is get under your car again and confirm which link has the movement in it. If you have a b210 manual the instructions in it for fault finding will be very similar for the 320.

They have one on the shelf I cant remember which one though but they can order the other side in an hour.

I know which one has a play...its the passenger side.

I meant side rod or tie rod. Both use ball joints which wear and cause the movement so confirming which is the problem could save you buying all of it when it isn't needed. Although if all the parts are $24.95 it wouldn't hurt just to replace the whole lot. At least it would give you peace of mind. cheers

the culprit is the passenger side tie rod looking on the tip of the cross rod, which is the right side if you are looking at the pic.

side rod is a tie rod

same thing, Nissan's language Side Rod = Tie Rod, Cross Rod = Drag Link

I guess i just have to try the "Outer Tie Rod"

I took both tie rod ends including the drag link or center rod and I was trying to unbolt the tie rods 1st while on car but its very tight. Did not have the luck to take it off so decided to take the whole thing off.

I'm just going to take it to a mechanic and ask them to take it off for me, and make sure they leave a mark on the thread so its close to drive to get wheel alignment.

In the process of taking the tie rods off I broke 2 balljoint/tie rod remover. 1st is TFC ? i think from supercheap $19.95 the tip where you slide between the tie rod broke off. 2nd from Autobarn Supatools? from kingchrome and the bolt broke off.

I tried the hitting the tie rod trick but did not work for me.

I'm having a hard time with this tie rod ends

I bought a pair and one fits perfectly which is the passenger side, but the drivers side's thread is bigger than the centre rod's thread.

I've replaced and returned it back to Autopro twice where they get their tie rods at Road Safe and according to their book its the right part.

Anyone in australia knows where I can buy one? I'm getting sick of AutoPro's as they even measured the thread and they made a mistake again.

All the tie rod ends from the 320, 520, 521, and 620 trucks are the same.  If they dont come off from the spindle arm, then slightly tap the bolt with a hammer to loosen it up and out.  It will come off, but dont do it hard cause you will bow and screw up the threads.

BAD NEWS!!!

I thought I got the right tie rod end for the driver side as we tested it at the shop and it screws in but when you pull it very hard it slides off, I found out when I installed it on the car and tried the steering and it came off.

I called up the main distributor (ROADSAFE/PARTCO) and they cant help me anymore as thats what is on their listing.

I roughly measured the hole on the tie rod where the thread and the old one is roughly over 11mm diametre and the new one is 12.6mm diametre, so obviously its way too big.

Anyone knows where I can get the right size? What do you guys in US use? what brand?

I'm very desperate now....

I even asked if they have the centre rod/cross rod/drag link but they dont have any. thought it might have a bigger thread on one end.

ADVICE PLEASE!!!

You did the right thing! I wouldn't be gamb|ing on a link that has different threads at each end. Hope it all works fine now.

cheers

I lost my first morrie due to a steering arm giving way. It went straight off the road into a table drain and rolled onto the roof, skidded down the road about 30m before flipping back onto the wheels. Poor thing was dead in under 10secs. Now I get serious whenever I do anything with the steering. Again you've done the right thing. cheers

Do you have a scanner?

I bought a 521 manual off ebay very similar except some panel parts, interior and engine

I got my made up centre rod/drag link today but now I need new left hand locking nut. Called most of the bolt and nuts places and they dont sell them, one said they have in stock currently in virginia (northside), might get it 2moro.

Something always comes up cant seem to get it roadworthy
