94 Q45

So I had the tie rod ends in my trunk for a while and finally found some time today to replace them. I thought it'll be straingt forward sort of job. Removed the pin and unscrewed the knot but I can't get the darn screw to slide down and out. What am I doing wrong? Am on the right track? Also as far as replacing the dust boot is there a trick or anything or simple replacement?

Thanks a bunch

If I understand, the screw sliding down and out would be the tie rod end?If so there are a couple of methods. Some more favored than others.

I choose to shoot a shot of white paint where the lock nut is then back off a 1/4 turn. Loosen the castle nut atop the T.R.. a few turns. Now smack soundly with a 2# maul. Now remove the castle nut. Now unscrew the T.R.E. Now the lock nut., tape the threaded portion of inner T.R.E. apply grease and slide the new boot on. Assemble as follows. Put the O ring on the boot. Thread T.R.E. lock nut on to previous point, screw T.R.E. to previous point. Install in spindle, torque to spec. Tighten lock nut to spec Remember the wire tie securing the new boot. 1 hr. tops.Go to the alignment store and buy one.

Oh yeah, be certain to clean the inner T.R.E. throughly before new boot.

All I did (which others have done) is...

1) Count the threads from the nut in.2) Loosen the nut and turn the entire tie rod to unscrew it from the tie rod end.3) Once you get it off remove the old boot and install the new one with the new "wire ties". Of course, clean and repack with grease.4) Screw the tie rod end back into the tie rod end and adjust to the previous setting and tighten up the set nut.

Repeat with the other side... Was a pretty easy job. I think on the first side I had to pull it off again because I forgot something so make sure you have it all done before you screw it back on.

Shane, when you write ''repack with grease'', does that imply that the boots were originally packed with grease? If so, why??????
