I have a noise that started today. It's coming from just under the valve cover it sounds like a tick or grinding tick sound that I can here when in idle. I can record the sound if that would help.

here's a pic with the sound coming from somewhere around where I circled.

ps. I checked the oil level (its good) and i searched the forums lol)

Whoa dude that sounds ****ing bad. It might just be the ****ty recording you made (at first I thought it was a bunch of frogs ribbiting). Anyway, which engine / car is this? Does the car run differently? Are there any changes aside from noise.

acutally the sound clip sounds like the actual noise. it kinda does sound like frogs ribbiting lol.

its a S13 stock engine, aside from the noise it runs just fine

Ohnoesitsdamuthfukingrmlans!!

Most likely your upper timing chain guides, Nissan suggests removal of them since they don't do $hit anyway.

Yup timing chain guides. Top one is real easy. the other one takes another 20 minutes because you got to remove the front cover....

Hey i have the same noise; it sounds like a rubbing/grinding. I opened my valve cover and the top guide broke off. I also noticed that the chain had been rubbing on the underside of the valve cover. I pressed inbetween the cams on the chain and its kinda loose.

You guys say to remove the top one and the one on the driver's side, (shaped like a belt kinda?)

Question 1: will the top one that broke off and cant be found be a problem?

Question 2: if i remove the driver's side guide as well, will this noise stop??

need help asap.

It is definantly a timing chain guide. I had the exact same noise. Even the nissan manual says if they break just remove them.

It was my t chain guide, actually it broke at the base and was ratteling betwen the valve cover and the chain, sounded awfull, however, the guy who I bought the car from let me take it to my garage, I pulled the cover and threw the broken part away. replaced everything, and it sounded great, so I bought it.Very easy, just remember plug order, reseal the gasket, and torque the cover bolts properly.

sato, looks like yours is already gone from the pic.

look in the middle of the cam sprockets, right inbetween is where it should be. You can even see the two bolts that hold the guide down
